Short notes on workflows, automation, and the systems around them: how BJV thinks about the problem before choosing the tool.

  1. When automation is premature

Automation repeats whatever it is given. If no one can yet say how a workflow runs, who decides, or how it fails, automating it first fixes the confusion in place.

  2. Define the workflow before you automate it

A workflow definition names the people, steps, data, decisions, controls, exceptions and failure paths before any tool is chosen. What each part means, and why the order matters.

  3. What ongoing care for a workflow should and shouldn't cover

Care for a workflow already in use should be defined as clearly as the workflow itself: what is checked, how issues are reviewed, what maintenance is included, and where care ends.

Start with the operating problem

Bring the workflow that should work as one system.
